System One Animal Health Tech in Rockville, Maryland

Title: Animal Health Tech

Location: Rockville, MD

Schedule: M-F 8 am-5 pm

Type: 6 contract, with the possibility of becoming permanent

Start date: Immediate

Responsibilities:

  • Duties include but are not limited to: Receive, examining, transferring, identifying, and properly housing incoming animal shipments according to SOP's.

  • Provide food, water, and environmental enrichment to animals following SOP's or approved ASP's.

  • Perform daily animal health surveillance checks and report any abnormal conditions of either the animals or the animal room environment to supervisory staff.

  • Perform routine animal husbandry.

  • Perform prescribed treatments on animals as directed by the veterinarian.

  • Maintain a daily animal census in assigned animal rooms.

  • Humanely sacrifice animals designated for euthanasia in accordance with the appropriate ASP's and facility SOP's.

  • Understand and follow SOP's, safety procedures, and quality assurance guidelines for animal care.

  • Prepare and submit records, charts, logs, cage cards, and inventories as required by SOP's.

  • Maintain clean and organized work and personal areas.

  • Sanitize and decontaminate all areas of the facility in accordance with cleaning schedules.

Requirements:

  • B.S. degree preferred but not required, AALAS ALAT certification preferred by not required if the candidate holds an advanced degree in Animal Science or a related field.

  • P revious rodent technical experience mandatory (handling/restraint, identification methods, injections – all routes (specifically I.V. injections), genotype sampling, blood collection – all routes (specifically retro-orbital), gavage and oral dosing, medication/ anesthetics/analgesics administration and dosage calculations, euthanasia, irradiation, sentinel sample collection, organectomy, surgery experience with osmotic pump placement, surgical room prep, preparation and sterilization of surgery packs, insertion/removal of sutures and wound clips; breeding and colony maintenance; assessment and treatment of sick animals)

  • Must achieve ALAT certification after 1 year of experience and within 18 months of hire.

  • Previous rodent caretaking experience preferred unless candidate holds AALAS certification at the ALAT/LAT level or has an advanced degree in Animal Science or a related field.

  • Candidate must have attention to detail and be able to multi-task.
