Public Works Motor Eqiupment Operator I

General Definition/Conditions of Work:

Operates variety of grounds maintenance construction equipment and vehicles in support of the City street maintenance and construction. Operates equipment at operational sites throughout the City. Operates construction equipment and vehicles to load, transport, excavate, grade, etc. on a daily basis. Performs maintenance on equipment associated with Public Works operation. Tasks assigned will be is support of the operation of city maintenance or construction projects, building and ground maintenance, roadside maintenance or other activity locations as required. Position is under the direct supervision of the applicable supervisor or job foreman depending upon the division to which the individual is assigned. Performance is evaluated through observation and accomplishment of tasks assigned and in conference.

This is moderate work (20-40 pounds) requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, and lifting. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, hazards and atmospheric conditions.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • If trained to do so, operates construction equipment with various attachments in accomplishing site clearing, excavation, earth moving, spreading and compaction utilizing loader, scraper, compactors and dozers;
  • If trained to do so, operates vehicles and equipment of various configurations.
  • Performs routine maintenance (equipment and area).
  • Observes department safety practices and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Considerable knowledge of standard safety practices governing the operation of vehicles.
  • Considerable knowledge of relevant traffic laws.
  • Basic knowledge and/or experience in the use of general hand tools.
  • Ability to learn radio/telephone communication procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to develop skills in the operation of wheel and tracked loaders, forklifts, tractors, large vehicles etc.
  • Ability to work in conjunction with a production type operation to fulfill requirements of a plant operation.
  • Ability to safely lift, carry, move, etc. reasonably heavy loads, equipment and other materials.
  • Ability to properly use, operate, and maintain tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to equipment
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to dust, noise, fumes, odors, vibrations, glare, sparks, machinery noise and inclement weather.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent A minimum of one (1) year experience in vehicle and light construction equipment operation

Licenses/Certificates or Other Requirements:

  • Valid Driver's License Class B Commercial Driver's License or the ability to obtain said license within six months of the date of employment
