Position Title: Market Operations Analyst II, III, or Sr (Energy Market)

Position Purpose:

This position models, analyzes, quantifies, and reports the technical, environmental, and economic conditions of Basin Electric Power Cooperative’s (BEPC) various commodities, short and mid-term positions, associated risks, and general commodity market intelligence. The person gathers data to support analysis and interacts with groups on various projects that require market transaction data, support for variable cost analysis, and support for short and mid-term market operations decisions.

Essential Functions:

  • Manages the system wide generator outage and testing process for all owned and purchased generation. Maintains effective communication and coordination with the applicable marketplace, Day-ahead and Real-time traders, Natural Gas Traders, and other parties as necessary.

  • Gathers and analyzes date for operational involvement in Basin Electric resource coordination, the MBPP participants, NIMECA, and other marketing programs. Compiles quarterly data for NIMECA or other marketing generation programs as needed.

  • Works with Performance Engineers and plant staff to review and update unit data books, including physical parameters and costs, for purposes of maintaining adherence to market protocols and associated BEPC unit offer strategies.

  • Coordinates with Operations to optimize plant availability and flexibility.

  • Recommends on the optimization of units and timing of outages, derates, and tests in the applicable marketplace by qualitative and quantitative analysis and through the understanding of market protocols.

  • Interfaces with SPP’s Market Monitoring Unit as a BEPC representative.

  • Monitors and develops tools in maintaining and complying with environmental operation constraints. Apply environmental rules within regulations.

  • Develops and administers tours and educational training for Marketing to employees, members, and interested outside parties. Provides training with plant operators & internal marketing staff to increase their understanding and relay changes of market operations.

  • Provides feedback to BEPC’s Generation Working Group on modeled unit parameters to create a more accurate energy position modeling.

  • Assists with Basin Electric’s on-going seasonal, annual, and long-term commodity position analysis for SPP, MISO, West, and NWMT markets inclusive of physical and financial hedging. Serves as an Energy Markets representative on the financial forecasting model development team.

  • Coordinates with Resource Planning and other internal departments on related resource and market reporting and energy position reporting forecasting.

  • Performs technical and economic evaluations of various short-term and long-term power supply alternatives, including short-term shutdown procedures or unit offer adjustments.

Qualifications:

Market Operations II:

  • Four-year degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Math, Engineering, Energy Management, or a related field; and

  • 3 years’ experience commodity related support, power marketing, generation operations, or financial analysis of operations and commodity marketing support.

Market Operations III:

  • Four-year degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Math, Engineering, Energy Management, or a related field; and

  • 5 years of experience in commodity related support, power marketing, generation operations, or financial analysis of operations and commodity marketing support.

Market Operations Sr.

  • Four-year degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Math, Engineering, Energy Management, or a related field; and

  • 7 years’ experience commodity related support, power marketing, generation operations, and/or financial analysis of operations and commodity marketing support.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Able to interact in a cross functional team setting and share knowledge of job-related subject matter.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, time management skills and attention to detail.

  • Proficient with personal computers and Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Typical Physical/Mental/Environmental Demands:

It also requires finger dexterity and hand coordination. This position requires good hearing and vision, and the ability to speak. It also requires the ability to develop plans, procedures, and goals; present information to others; and work under stress to complete projects within deadlines. Occasional travel required.
